Medina VFW gives donation for memorial

Medina VFW gives donation for memorial

On Saturday, the Company F Memorial Committee was presented with a check for $10,000 from the VFW in Medina, which places them at the level needed for an anonymous donor to give another $10,000. MEDINA — A recent plea for donations by the Company F Memorial Committee has resulted in Medina VFW making the largest single donation in its history.

On Saturday, VFW members presented a check for $10,000 to Cathy Fox and Bill Menz for the Company F Memorial Fund, as the committee seeks to raise funds for a statue of a soldier atop the monument at Medina Armory.

This donation has propelled the Memorial Fund to the point where the committee can approach an anonymous donor who made a $10,000 pledge when they reached $43,000 of their $65,000 goal.

This comes after a recent donation by local contractor Carl Petronio, who gave the committee $5,000, bringing their total to $37,000.

"That left us just $6,000 short of where we needed to be,” said Menz, committee chairman. "It’s been a struggle. After the person in charge of major donations got sick, I started knocking on doors and e-mailing letters.”

"Company F has a big history here,” said VFW commander Jim Freas. "A lot of our charter members were in Company F. At this point in time, we could afford to do this.”

The VFW was chartered in 1927 and has about 200 members. They raise money through chicken barbecues, raffles and donations.

"This is the biggest one-time donation we’ve ever made, and I’m happy we could do it,” Freas said.
